I am looking for someone who would like to work about 6 months a year on a long term basis. I will be gone during those months so this is not a mentoring position. I will not be reachable when I am gone so you must have the confidence and ability to work on your own. I have a one person practice that is roughly 50/50 large/small animal work. Equine is predominate with cows, sheep, goats, pigs, reindeer, llamas, alpacas, and yaks making up the rest of large animal work. Most of the large animal is April-September with little activity during the winter. Most years there is some fly-in equine work in the Alaska Range. Normal office hours are 9-12 and 3-6 M-F. The 12-3 slot is reserved for personal time like skiing, running or biking. Clients are booked on 30 minute time slots so a very busy day is 12 clients. I handle all my own emergencies. If you are on the premises you are expected to take any emergencies that call in. I do not carry a cell phone when I am out ( I do not own a cell phone), but check messages upon return to the clinic. I do not book weekend appointments. I have one assistant who serves as receptionist, bookkeeper, and tech in that order. You will be responsible for drawing blood, taking radiographs, doing dental cleanings, giving injections, prepping for surgery, placing catheters and so on. There is a cabin that my relief vets typically use in the summer and there is an apartment attached to the clinic for winter use. I will be gone Jan./Feb. each year and most of the summer. This coming year I will be gone Jan. & Feb., March 3-13, April 15-May 5, May 25-June 2, June 10-25, July 3-17, July 21-Agust 14 and some time in Sept. and October. Summer scheduling is flexible but plans need to be made the previous fall as we book our air taxi then for the next summer. The clinic is completely non-computerized,;I do not use e-mail, everything is hand written on paper, I can find any record in under 30 seconds even when there is no electricity. we do not accept any plastic/electronic payments. There are typically other job opportunities available in Fairbanks and certainly in other parts of the Alaska though most of these are small animal only. If you enjoy winter activities, Fairbanks is an ideal location. I generally ski from mid-October to late April. Summers are fabulous with 6 weeks of continuous daylight in the middle. I will be gone Sept. 21-Oct.30 so there is no point in calling during that time. I will be here until Jan.2cd 2018 and then gone until late Feb. I may be able to check e-mail occasionally during that time. If you e-mail me do not expect a timely response, I usually check e-mail every couple of weeks unless I am expecting something from overseas. I have the names of vets who have worked for me in the past for people to contact and get an outside opinion of the practice. I am paying a flat rate of $2500/week which includes all emergency work (weekends included). I definitely need someone to work starting in mid-April and could possibly need someone as early as January, especially for the right person. Call Cort Zachel 907-479-3641.
