The Medical Director—under the guidance of the field management team—ensures on a day-to-day basis that the hospital team carries out VCA’s promise to our clients: making their pet’s health our top priority and excellent service our goal. The Medical Director mentors the veterinary and technical staff and oversees the medical standards and profitable operations of the practice, while following the mission of providing excellent medical and surgical care with honesty, respect and compassion.

Skills and Qualifications
A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, or equivalent, from an accredited university.
Residency training with board eligibility or certification in a Veterinary Specialty.
Ability to become licensed to practice in the state of Oregon.
Professional comportment and appearance, with excellent interpersonal skills and a positive, friendly attitude.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially to a diverse range of audiences and settings.
The ability to make decisions, delegate responsibility and achieve results with hospital team members.
Respect for and willingness to work with clients and their pets.
A commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics, and promoting attendance of continuing education events by both the Medical Director and Associate Veterinarians.
Direct and develop the veterinary, technical and administrative staff towards the goal of quality patient care and excellent client service; assist in the formulation of objectives and policies to ensure efficient and profitable hospital operations.
Oversee the hiring, reviewing, disciplining and terminating of professional staff, in accordance with and with the approval of the Regional Field Leadership or Group Vice President.
Review the P&L report monthly and partner with the Hospital Manager to increase revenue and limit expenses; work with the HM to prepare and submit the yearly budget (budget forecast, operating plan, cap-ex expenditures) and participate in the evaluation process with field management.
Stay up-to-date with new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine, fulfill VCA requirements for attending local VCA Continuing Education meetings and complete at least 30 hours of accredited CE per calendar year.
Model an “owner” mentality at Northwest Veterinary Specialists by demonstrating a willingness to assist all employees in making the practice a success; invest the necessary amount of time to accomplish the required responsibilities and ensure the smooth operation of the hospital.
Develop a rapport with clients and determine their needs and wishes; perform physical examinations and diagnostic/medical/surgical/procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort.
Maintain client/patient medical/surgical records and make certain all necessary logs are kept up-to-date through established protocols; assist colleagues in follow-up and future management of the patient.
Supervise the administration and case review of client medical complaints.
Positively represent the hospital and VCA in the professional community and to the general public.
