Under the direction of the Director, Division of Animal Health, Department of Agriculture, performs tasks for the diagnosis and control of contagious and infectious disease of livestock and poultry; performs surveys, examinations and other related activities of livestock disease control and eradication; conducts and arranges for the conduct of diagnostic tests; administers laws and regulations regarding animal disease control, quarantines and the interstate and intrastate movement of livestock; performs animal cruelty investigations; work on animal emergency preparedness; acts of Liaison between the NJ Department of Agriculture and various government, livestock and animal health related groups; outreach activities – speaks about animal disease control at meetings; enforces laws and regulations concerning livestock auction markets; does other related work as required

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or completion of the training program administered by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) of the (AVMA), or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB),or achievement of diplomat status in any (AVMA) specialty board.
NOTE: All college degrees (both U.S. and non-U.S.) and/or transcripts from a college or university must already be evaluated for accreditation by the closing date of posting. Transcripts (if required) must be submitted with resume. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in ineligibility.
Veterinarian 1 – No experience requirements.
Veterinarian 2 – Three (3) years of experience in the field of animal disease control or laboratory diagnostic work.
NOTE: Experience with livestock is preferred.
LICENSE: Appointees must possess a passing grade, as determined by the test sponsor, on the National Board Exam and the Clinical Competency test or equivalent test, or passage of the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), or achievement of diplomat status in any AVMA specialty board. The Appointing Authority is responsible for verification.
Appointee will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
RESIDENCY LAW: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act,” which became effective September 1, 2011, all persons newly hired by the Executive Branch on or after that date shall have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey. New Jersey State employees hired prior to September 1, 2011 who transfer from within the Executive Branch or from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than seven days but who reside outside the State of New Jersey are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the act.
