If so, then the position of Manager, Licensed Veterinary Technicians (the Manager) at the ASPCA Adoption Center may be for you!
As a key member of the medical team, you’ll closely partner with the veterinarians and other colleagues to deliver excellent patient care at the Adoption Center for approximately 3,000 at-risk pets per year, and will work collaboratively and effectively with internal and external stakeholders to further the ASPCA’s ultimate desired outcome that all animals live good lives. You will partner with the Director, Medical Operations to ensure compassionate, quality patient care is provided by the LVTs to all canines and felines cared for by the Adoption Center. You will address the animals’ health concerns, in order to improve their welfare and move them quickly into safe and loving homes.
The Center currently provides shelter and adoption for five groups of animals:
Animal victims of cruelty and neglect brought to us by the NYPD
Animals brought to us through our community engagement team
At-risk underage kittens and other medically-compromised stray animals
Animals surrendered by their owners and in need of adoption into new homes and
Animals transferred in from shelter/rescue partners
All medical care is provided within the parameters of the Adoption Center’s shelter medicine protocols and aligned with ASPCA One Fund guidelines. To succeed in this role, the Manager will be an excellent supervisor and coach who enjoys working with both people and animals. The LVT team will deliver compassionate nursing care and assist the veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and diagnostic testing procedures following low-stress handling principles and shelter medicine best practices. Success also hinges on the ability to collaborate within the larger medical team and with other teams at the Adoption Center; the Manager will help ensure adequate support is provided to the veterinarians while also providing direct patient care that ensure the animals’ physical and behavioral needs are met on both an individual patient and population level.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Nursing Care and Veterinary Support (60%)
Provide compassionateand quality patient care, utilizing low-stress handling techniques
Proficient technical nursing skills, including, but not limited to, venipuncture; catheter placement; administration of oral, topical, and injectable medications; diagnostic testing procedures; triage and basic examination
Competently and compassionately explain information about an animal’s condition to other Adoption Center staff members, volunteers, foster caregivers, and adopters with easily understood language
Be an active member of the Medical Team on daily Medical-Behavior-Shelter rounds (MBS Rounds) and in intra- and inter-departmental meetings
Document and communicate patient concerns or observed changes to Veterinarians
Ensure accurate and timely data entry to animals’ medical records, including transfer of information from other ASPCA departments’ software systems and diagnostic test results from outside laboratories
Feed and medicate patients following veterinarian instructions and standard operating procedures
Assist in humane euthanasia
Learn, implement, and teach new protocols; support and comply with ASPCA and Adoption Center policies and protocols
People Management and Training (20%)
With the Director, nurture a culture of learning at the Adoption Center, including ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment, active participation in goal setting and monitoring, clear expectations, and regular practice of feedback and after-actions
Be “on the floor” to answer questions, make timely operational and staffing adjustments, receive feedback, lend a hand, and ensure deep understanding of and compliance with the Adoption Center’s operations
Provide training, supervision, modeling, coaching and ongoing guidance for direct reports
Provide regular, timely and direct feedback via 1:1 check in’s and quarterly feedback sessions with direct reports
Play an integral role in creating, implementing and enhancing an effective emergency mobilization plan (e.g. storms and large-scale animal intakes) including overnight management presence as needed
Train, supervise and coach volunteers in handling animals for various members of the medical team
Work with the Director, Medical Operations to develop written materials (protocols, information sheets, data sheets, etc.) and oversee their use by staff and volunteers
Maintain adequate staffing levels at all times; assign and/or re-assign appropriate responsibilities, as well as direct work flow, in order to maximize productivity and maintain coverage in the event of planned absences, call outs, injuries, increased volume, etc.
Ensure continuous coverage to ensure staff and animal safety, working with the Coordinator, Medical Services to schedule per diem support as needed
Rotate weekend, holiday and after hours coverage with other Medical and Adoption Center managers
Serve as a champion in times of change management and work with Director to identify ways to improve policies and practices
Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Housekeeping and Maintenance (20%)
Clean and disinfect kennels, equipment, and facility while utilizing appropriate PPE
Follow all PPE and cleaning protocols
Follow all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental Standard Operating Procedures
Assist in keeping supplies stocked by noting when supplies are running low
Immediately advise supervisor of any conditions that are unsafe, including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules
Qualifications:
Strong people manager
Ability to provide training, supervision, modeling, coaching and ongoing guidance for direct reports
Knowledge of veterinary medical concepts, protocols, and procedures
Possess critical thinking and multi-tasking skills; able to quickly adjust focus and shift priorities based on patient and Adoption Center needs
Excellent low-stress animal handing and restraint skills
Capable of using animal management software with an affinity for learning new technology quickly
Knowledge of animal behavior and animal welfare; Readily able to work closely with animals who are behaviorally and/or medically compromised; and to participate in and support staff in euthanasia decisions
Demonstrated ability to collaborate within and across departments or working groups
Able to work efficiently and calmly both as a member of the team and independently with minimal supervision
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail
Basic computer skills, including Excel, Microsoft Office, and email; familiarity with PetPoint or other shelter software systems a plus
Available to work a flexible schedule when needed including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
Able to lift 40 pounds
Able to work standing for 10 or more hours.

Education
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field required
Eligibility for licensure in New York State (NYS) as a veterinary technician required; current licensure in NYS strongly preferred
Work Experience:
3-5 years veterinary hospital and/or shelter experience
2 or more years management experience; experience managing veterinary or animal care staff preferred
Fear Free® certified or completed within 60 days of employment
