About this Role:
The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking applicants for a Diagnostic Medicine Intern. The purpose of the position is to offer quality of after-hours testing performed by the clinical pathology laboratory while at the same time train veterinarians who want to advance their diagnostic skills and/or those who are hoping to pursue advanced training in the field of veterinary diagnostic medicine.
The successful candidate is one with an interest in veterinary diagnostic medicine, has excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to arrive to perform afterhours tests within 20 minutes of being paged

Duties / Responsibilities:
To provide after-hour services in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Duties will include the following Clinical Pathology:
Log-in samples into the laboratory
Operate the Siemens Advia Hematology Analyzer to generate partial CBC results
Operate the cobas C501® Chemistry Analyzer to generate serum chemistry results
Operate the NOVA Stat Profile® Analyzer to generate blood gas and other chemistry results
Complete partial urinalysis results (physical and chemical components)
Operate the Coulter® Z2™ Analyzer to generate cell count results for pleural, synovial and peritoneal fluids
Prepare blood films and cytologic preparations for analysis by medical technologists or pathologists
Undergo extensive training in the methods of sample handling, processing, and analysis
Retrain in sessions which may be held at the discretion of the laboratory supervisor or pathologist
Other duties logically associated with Clinical Pathology Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory
Assist in the receiving and delivery of dead animals and/or packages containing diagnostic specimens to the necropsy “in-coming” cooler for cases brought to the Emergency Desk of the Veterinary Health Center outside of normal KSVDL business hours.
Occasionally, opening a package that contains rabies suspect materials to retrieve the submission form may be necessary.
Set up cultures submitted by the Veterinary Health Center after hours when called to perform after-hours services.
The intern must arrive to perform duties, or communicate a reasonable estimated ETA when delayed due to work demands, within 20 minutes of initial request.
There may be occasions when the intern will be asked to participate by attending and/or teaching within the KSU veterinary professional curriculum.
Intern will rotate between the laboratories within the veterinary diagnostic lab and will be expected to attend rounds. The intern will be first author for at least one publication and one presentation.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent by May 2022

Preferred Qualifications:
General practice experience is preferred

Salary Range / Pay Rate:
$ 34,000 - $ 36,899 annual salary
