You will teach and mentor students in both didactic and hands-on settings, contribute to curriculum development, participate in student assessment, and contribute to the overall academic environment. Your clinical insight and professional experience will help bridge the gap between textbook learning and real-world application.

TMCC is hiring a full-time veterinarian for student instruction in their veterinary nursing (vet tech) and veterinary assistant programs. This position can either be tenure-track faculty or zero rank instructor. The zero-rank instructor role has more flexibility for salary negotiation. The full-time instructor has the responsibility for teaching at 15 credits per semester along with other responsibilities. 

Minimum Qualifications

1. Must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited program of Veterinary Medicine and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) with active licensure and in good standing with the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.

2. Must have the educational background and occupational experience appropriate to understand and fulfill program goals.

3. Experience working with licensed veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants.

4. Ability to utilize or learn innovative programs and technologies to deliver coursework.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with leadership in a veterinary technician/veterinary nursing program.

2. Three years or more of experience teaching in a college setting or equivalent for college students.

3. Experience in a variety of teaching and evaluation methods and delivery modalities including multimedia presentation of classroom lectures and laboratory activities.

4. Minimum of three years of clinical experience as a veterinarian working in companion animal and/or mixed animal veterinary medicine preferred.

5. Experience with program accreditation via the AVMA-CVTEA.

Physical Demands

The applicant must be able to effectively perform duties and tasks, with or without reasonable accommodations, related to veterinary medicine and teaching in a variety of settings.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for working closely with the Academic Program Director to organize continuous program review and development processes that assure program effectiveness.

• Teach veterinary nursing (or veterinary assistant) courses and laboratories, with possibility of clinical teaching offsite. Prepare and provides lectures, laboratory and clinical experiences according to the curriculum. Be comfortable in a shelter environment while understanding the needs of the animals and the needs of the students for education.

• Actively support efforts to achieve and maintain full accreditation with the AVMA; meeting all requirements and submitting reports and documentation as required.

• Develop and revise course syllabi and instruction materials to be reflective of current and modern veterinary medical practice.

• Provide academic assistance opportunities through regularly scheduled office hours and/or by appointment.

• Maintain open and timely communication with the Academic Program Director on all issues and matters related to the program and students.

• Serve on college committees such as the Program Advisory Committees and/or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and assist the Academic Program Director in coordination of committee activities when appropriate.

• Assist in planning budgets and utilizing monies efficiently for the program.

• Assist the Academic Program Director in promoting effective business relations with veterinarians, veterinary licensing boards, veterinary and veterinary technician associations, animal shelters, equipment and industry suppliers, and local merchants.

• Assist in the preparation of program class schedules when required.

• Participate in the planning process to assist the College in effectively fulfilling its mission and goals to include recruitment and retention efforts.

• Maintain appropriate documents, records, and files in accordance with Veterinary State Board, Veterinary Nursing Program policies, the Committee for Veterinary Technician Activities and Education (AVMA-CVTEA), and College policies and procedures. 

• Maintain a current DEA certificate and have a current Nevada license to practice veterinary medicine.  The DEA will be used to purchase controlled substances and the NV Veterinary license will be used to procure veterinary supplies. The licensed professional will also perform surgical procedures for certain courses in the curriculum and prescribe medication for our patients.

• Maintain professional relevancy through continuing education and professional and personal development. Be comfortable around companion animals as well as large animals and pocket pets/exotics. Be willing to expand upon your knowledge based with species you are less familiar with.

• Perform other duties as requested by the Academic Program Director or TMCC Administration.

Academic Faculty Responsibilities

Teaching and workload assignments are scheduled throughout the calendar year, and may require evening and weekend obligations at one or more college locations.

• Teach 30 (15/15) credit or contact hours during the academic year, August through May, in various modalities as assigned, including in-person, hybrid, online, live-virtual (hy-flex), and at high-school sites (Jump-Start dual credit), per the needs of the program.

• Support student learning outcomes assessment processes by teaching toward approved student learning outcomes and assessing student performance.

• Assist with curriculum and program review, revision, and assessment. Aid in the development of new course materials and innovative instructional techniques that improve student learning.

• Work closely with department peers and administrators to become an effective teacher and contributing member of the academic unit.

• Attend and actively participate in College events, department and division meetings, college or Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) committees, and community service activities.

• Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current in field knowledge and pedagogies that expand breadth and depth of understanding in the discipline. 

• Complete training outlined in TMCC's Faculty Standards of Online Instruction, when and as needed.

• Hold 5 office-hours per week.

• Participate in student advising, recruitment, and retention efforts.

• Travel occasionally to community and workforce sites, conferences, events, and so on, per the needs of the program.

• Communicate and interact in a professional and collegial manner with faculty, students, staff, and administration, in the best interests of the college and the people it serves.

• Comply with departmental administrative responsibilities and published college and NSHE policies and procedures.

• Uphold the Mission, Vision, and Values of TMCC and perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with them.

• Adhere to the published codes of NSHE as detailed in the Board of Regents Handbook.

• Adhere to the Code of Ethical Standards of the State of Nevada (Nevada Revised Statutes 281A.400-281A.480).
